Google Rolls Out Gradient Icons for Messages and Phone Apps

Google began rolling out refreshed icons for Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts on November 2, 2026, bringing subtle gradients, sharper edges, and refined color curves to align the essential communication apps with the company-wide visual language established by Search and Workspace.

Google Messages, Phone, and Contacts Receive Gradient App Icons

Google has officially started distributing redrawn icons for three of its core Android applications: Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts. The update introduces a cohesive visual identity across the suite of communication apps that handle texting, calls, and address books on Android devices.

The redesign replaces flat, minimalist aesthetics with a unified approach featuring subtle gradients and more defined outlines. According to the company, the changes are strictly cosmetic. The underlying functionality of the applications remains completely untouched as the visual refresh lands on user devices over the coming weeks.

Google has a massive number of applications included with Android, and while it is easy to forget about simple everyday tools, the company continues to refine them. The updated icons are sharper and clearer on smartphone home screens. The company has adjusted the curvature, spacing, and coloring to match the rest of Google’s updated application ecosystem. The aesthetic changes follow visual directions adopted across various products, including the corporate logo.

Starting today, we’re rolling out refreshed icons for three apps that help you stay connected: Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts. These are the same apps you trust and use every day, now with enhanced icons designed with your feedback in mind.

Design Adjustments and Beta Testing Timeline

The visual overhaul first surfaced in developer builds before hitting public distribution. Google Messages v20261030 beta introduced the updated icon featuring a plump, rounded speech bubble and a smooth color transition blending from a softer pinkish-blue highlight across the top edge down into a vibrant royal blue.

A darker solid blue bubble sits tucked behind it to the upper left, preserving a nod to the older overlapping design while depicting an ongoing conversation. Under the hood, internal icon resource names shifted from the previous asset identifier to a specific application launcher tag. The refreshed app icon also extends beyond smartphones, appearing on Wear OS alongside the same beta software version.

The current Google Messages icon relies on a clean, minimalist aesthetic featuring two interlocking horizontal pill shapes in contrasting shades of blue that form a third overlapping tone in the center. In contrast, the newer design shifts toward a more expressive depiction of a messaging conversation. The beta rollout arrived via app version v20261030_00 on Monday, November 2, 2026, bringing the updated icon to the SMS, MMS, and RCS client app.

Brand Alignment Across Android and Workspace Ecosystems

The November rollout follows a broader aesthetic shift across Google’s entire software portfolio. The company updated its iconic four-color corporate “G” logo to a bright gradient, a design language that subsequently swept through nearly all Workspace applications including Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar during an extended rollout earlier in the year.

For marketers and everyday users alike, the change places the primary Android texting client—where many RCS and message-based ad conversations take place—directly in line with Search, Gemini, Maps, and Gmail. While users continue to receive updates at staggered intervals depending on their device deployment schedules, the broader transition establishes a uniform look across Google’s entire device ecosystem.

Google Messages is Getting a New Gradient Icon

Google previously introduced redesigned icons for Messages, Phone, and Contacts in October 2022, utilizing overlapping shapes inspired by communication between people and designs that adapted to Material You theming. The latest November 2026 rollout marks another step in unifying the communication app family with subtle gradients and crisp edges.
