Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the multi-storied building on Bailey Road does not have a ‘fire exit’ even though the government has given repeated instructions to install fire extinguishers and take fire safety measures in all buildings but it is not being followed.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this while inaugurating the National Insurance Day-2024 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on Friday (March 1) aimed at promoting the concept of insurance through increasing public awareness. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Finance and the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA).

At the same event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Bank Bima service, which will facilitate the payment of insurance premiums directly from the bank.

The Prime Minister said that there is no fire exit in the multi-storied building on Bailey Road where the fire broke out. He urged everyone to follow the rules and regulations while constructing the building.

‘We always ask our architects, at least when they design houses or buildings, to have a small open balcony, a fire exit or ventilation space. But the architects who want to construct the buildings do not design properly and the owners do not want to spare an inch of space.

Sheikh Hasina said, ’45 people died in the fire on Bailey Road. What can be more difficult than this.’

‘And I know there was no insurance, so they (Bailey Road fire victims) will get nothing in compensation,’ he said. Awareness is very necessary in these cases.’
