Curtis Richardson got a little scared the other day. As the African American with the friendly smile and the distinctive wire-rimmed glasses on his nose scrolled through the pictures on his phone, he came across a selfie with Ron DeSantis. That must have been at the end of 2018, shortly after the Republican’s first election as governor of Florida. “I had completely forgotten that I had ever met him,” says Richardson. He had to promise his wife: “Nobody will see the photo.”
