Since 2020, the Groupe de Recherche et d’Analyse Appliquées pour le Développement (GRAAD Think Tank Burkina), has been implementing in Burkina Faso, the research project called “Socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 on African economies, social cohesion and governance: Evidence from Burkina Faso, Benin and South Africa”.

The project is carried out within the framework of a partnership between the African School of Economics (ASE) of Benin and the Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) of South Africa with the financial and technical support of the Center for Research for International Development (IDRC-Canada).

Dr Gountiéni D Lankoandé, executive secretary of GRAAD Burkina, project coordinator

The mission of the study was to analyze the micro and macroeconomic impacts of the health crisis in order to propose strategies to deal with similar future crises. From the results, it appears at the level of the global economy, that covid-19 led to a drop in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which fell from 5.2% before to 1.9%.

« We were also able to identify a drop in tax revenue which led to a budget deficit which is equivalent to double the situation before Covid-19. “, underlined Dr. Gountiéni D Lankoandé, Executive Secretary of GRAAD Burkina, coordinator of the project. It also notes a decline in turnover ranging from 14% to 17% for some companies surveyed.

Also, he said, household incomes experienced an average deterioration corresponding to a drop of 28%, thus aggravating food insecurity. In terms of social cohesion, the findings are that Covid-19 has led to a deterioration in social cohesion of around 5.09%. The accentuation of barrier measures has created a certain mistrust which has had an impact on social cohesion in households according to Dr. Lankoandé.

Never mind, positive impacts are also to be noted. ” Some households surveyed noted that they had more cordial relations with their children and wives. In the case of companies, Covid-19 has been a source of revenue growth “, he revealed.

In addition to the lessons learned, GRAAD intends to continue reflection on measures to anticipate similar crises, capable of protecting lives while preserving the economy. These preliminary data were presented to the press before the publication of the final report, which will be made available to governments and citizens as needed.
