Graduate’s Thesis Dedication to Humiliating Teacher Sparks Debate on Educator Conduct
A graduating student’s poignant decision to dedicate her thesis to a teacher who once belittled her has ignited a wider conversation about the lasting impact of educator behavior and the rising incidence of reported teacher misconduct. The act, shared widely on TikTok, underscores the complex relationship between students and educators and the potential for both harm and healing within the classroom.
The story began with a seemingly dismissive remark. While attending the Lyceum, the student recalled a mathematics lesson where her teacher questioned her intellect with the phrase, “Ah, but then you know how to use your brain.” Though potentially intended as a joke, the student felt deeply undermined, a sentiment that lingered for years. Rather than letting the incident fade into the past, she chose to confront it through her academic achievement.
The dedication page of her degree thesis, now circulating online, reads: “Ah, but then you know how to use your brain! (FG, mathematics teacher).” Beneath this, a powerful message of solidarity is inscribed: “To the never seen. To the mocked. To the excluded. I see you.” The graduate’s accompanying TikTok post, celebrating her accomplishment, included a pointed critique: “People like this can do everything, except teaching.”
This act of defiance comes amid growing concern over teacher misconduct in Italy. A 2024 study, “Presumptions mistreatment at school,” conducted by medical specialist Vittorio Lodolo D’Oria, revealed a disturbing trend. The analysis of online articles, studies, and publications from 2014 to 2024 showed that over 400 teachers have been reported for mistreatment of pupils over the past decade.
The vast majority of these reported cases – almost all involved women – occurred within Italian nursery schools. The number of complaints steadily increased, peaking in 2019. The study also highlighted a geographical disparity, with two out of three complaints originating in small towns and 43% concentrated in the South. Furthermore, approximately 60% of the teachers involved were over the age of 50.
The issue extends beyond verbal abuse. Data released in 2024 by Chief of Police Vittorio Pisani indicated a rise in physical assaults against teachers. Between January 1, 2023, and February 2024, nearly 133 physical assaults on teachers were reported within Italian high schools, resulting in hospital visits for the victims. Violence, the report clarified, can manifest as both physical and verbal aggression, perpetrated by both young people and adults.
The TikTok graduate’s story has reignited debate surrounding appropriate language in schools and the profound effect a single sentence can have on a student’s self-esteem and academic journey.
