Search Intensifies for Missing Polish Climber on Gran Sasso Amidst Challenging Conditions

A desperate search is underway for Karol Brozek, a 44-year-old Polish man, who went missing on the Gran Sasso mountain range in Italy. The search, which benefited from favorable weather conditions yesterday, continues despite a recent deterioration in the forecast.
The search is currently focused on the Conca degli Invalidi area, where the last known signal from Brozek’s telephone was triangulated. Cai Alpine Speleological Rescue technicians from the L’Aquila station are utilizing advanced technology, including the Recco system and a light helicopter, in their efforts to locate him. The Recco system is a crucial tool in mountain rescue, employing small, passive reflectors integrated into clothing and equipment. These reflectors bounce signals from handheld or helicopter-mounted detectors, allowing rescuers to pinpoint a missing person’s location with greater accuracy.
According to a journalist and mountain enthusiast, the area where Brozek was last contacted presents unique challenges. The Brizio via ferrata and the Normale route, popular climbing paths, diverge and then converge near the north ridge and summit of Corno Grande. The Conca degli Invalidi lies at a critical juncture – after the Brizio fork and before the routes rejoin – a section known for its precarious passages, complicating potential rescue operations.
Logistical Hurdles Complicate Recovery Efforts
Adding to the complexity, the recovery of a camper van associated with the missing person is proving difficult. The vehicle, weighing approximately 33 quintals (over 36,000 pounds), would require a significantly larger vehicle – a Eurocargo – for transport down the mountain. A senior official stated that navigating the winding road near the Fontari refuge poses a substantial risk, as heavy vehicles are susceptible to overturning, irrespective of snow or ice conditions.

Meanwhile, Brozek’s twin sister, Diana, is receiving a flood of information from the public via social media, including reports from individuals claiming psychic abilities. Some observers, reviewing photographs, have suggested one of Brozek’s dogs may have been wearing a double collar, leading to speculation about a possible GPS device. Others have proposed searching areas above the Madonnina on the Prati di Tivo side and the Val Maone valley, below Corno Piccolo.
Unfortunately, the search has been hampered by a turn in the weather. Conditions have worsened today, potentially hindering visibility and increasing the risks for rescue teams.
