For four decades, the sound of Grupo Jabva has been synonymous with celebration in Abasolo, Guanajuato. More than just a band, the group—often called “el corazón musical” (the musical heart) of the town—represents a living tradition, passed down through generations and woven into the fabric of community life. From humble beginnings in 1984, Grupo Jabva has develop into a fixture at weddings, festivals, and local events, their energetic performances and signature sound captivating audiences across the region. The band’s enduring appeal lies not only in their musical talent but too in their commitment to nurturing young musicians and preserving a vibrant cultural legacy.
The story of Grupo Jabva began with a shared passion for music and soccer among a group of friends. Sergio Vargas, the band’s founder, was 28 years old when he and his companions decided to take a leap of faith and form a musical group in February 1984. “We were just a bunch of friends who loved to play music and watch fútbol,” Vargas recalled, according to reporting by Notus. Their first gig came quickly—a wedding in a nearby community of Abasolo. Despite a limited repertoire, the band extended their four-hour contract by two hours, captivating the crowd with their enthusiasm. That night marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Today, Grupo Jabva’s sound is built on a blend of seasoned experience and fresh talent. Javier Castillo, the current vocalist, brings a dynamic stage presence to the group, having joined four years ago. He recounted a formative experience in high school, winning a singing contest on a bet. “I’ve loved to sing since I was a child. My family has many singers,” Castillo shared. Even as self-described as introverted offstage, he transforms when performing, actively engaging with the audience and embracing the energy of the crowd. Sergio Antonio Barrón, on guitar and second vocals since December 1996, emphasizes the importance of harmonic balance, explaining that the second voice isn’t simply about matching the lead, but enriching the overall sound.
The band’s history is filled with cherished memories, including “el vagón”—a small truck that served as their mobile headquarters during early tours. Gonzalo Vargas, the bassist since 1990, joined the group at age 16 after the passing of his uncle, José Luis Vargas Andrade. He took up the bass in his uncle’s memory, recognizing its crucial role in anchoring the rhythm. “If the bass fails, it’s immediately noticeable,” Vargas explained. He and the drummer work in tandem to create the infectious beat that gets people dancing.
A key element of Grupo Jabva’s enduring success is “La Máquina del Sabor” (The Flavor Machine)—Miguel Martínez Valdés, the band’s percussionist for the past 23 years. Martínez Valdés began his journey with the group as a young boy, carrying instruments and observing rehearsals. He learned by immersion, absorbing the music through observation and practice. “The drums and bass are what give music life,” he said, emphasizing the importance of precision and concentration in his role. He embodies the band’s commitment to cultivating talent from within, a practice they call nurturing their “fuerzas básicas” (basic forces)—young people who grow up around the group and eventually become formal members.
That pipeline of young talent is exemplified by Miguel Vargas, the band’s saxophonist. He grew up watching his cousins and uncle—the group’s representative—rehearse, attending practices from the age of seven or eight. He started with the güiro, then guitar and percussion, before finding his passion with the saxophone, an instrument that adds color and nuance to their performances. This intergenerational dynamic is central to Grupo Jabva’s identity.

With over four decades of history, Grupo Jabva is more than just a musical group; it’s a family, a school, and a living tradition in Abasolo. The band’s story is one of shared passion, dedication, and a deep connection to the community they serve. They’ve played countless weddings, traveled in that beloved “vagón,” and watched generations of young musicians find their voice within the group. The “máquina del sabor” continues to set the rhythm, the “fuerzas básicas” continue to develop, and the stage remains a place where, regardless of shyness or age, everyone transforms.
