Guardiola: Man City Still Have Work To Do | Improvement Needed

Manchester City Secure Bernabéu Victory, But Guardiola Demands Further Improvement in Champions League Pursuit

Despite a hard-fought 2-1 win against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu on Wednesday, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists his team is not yet ready to contend for the Champions League title. The victory, secured through goals from Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland, propelled City to fourth in the league phase standings, but Guardiola remains focused on addressing critical areas for improvement.

The match saw a resilient performance from City, overcoming an early setback after Real Madrid took the lead through Rodrygo. However, Guardiola emphasized that the team’s current level of play is insufficient for a deep run in the competition.

“It was a good experience for us being here,” Guardiola stated. “We felt the pressure of having to do it and there will be good lessons for the future. But that level is not quite enough. The players made a big effort but we still have much to improve.”

City’s Road to Recovery and Remaining Challenges

This result marks a significant step forward for Manchester City following their recent defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. However, Guardiola acknowledges the team has faced similar situations in the past, playing well but ultimately falling short.

“We’ve been here many times in the last five years, we’ve played many battles against them, but we’ve played much better and not won. This is the reality,” he explained. “We are not ready. We are far away. In February we will be better.”

Guardiola was candid about the team’s vulnerabilities, particularly in possession. “Until the first goal we scored they were much better. Every time we lost the ball they punished us, especially with Rodrygo. They have this quality and in the last stages I know we have to be better.”

Pressure Mounts on Real Madrid Manager Xabi Alonso

The match also intensified scrutiny on Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, who has been under pressure due to recent poor results. Reports leading up to the game suggested his position could be at risk with a loss to City. While Alonso’s future remains uncertain, he expressed pride in his team’s performance.

“It has been quite a tough game,” Alonso said. “We started really well with Rodrygo’s goal and had other chances, doing what we wanted to. In those 10 minutes they came back but the team kept trying. We did not lose our faith in the second half with all the difficulties, injuries we are living with.”

Alonso continued, “The players gave their last breath. I don’t have anything to reproach them for. I am grateful to the players for their attitude, keeping it up. We will keep on believing. I am sure we can make it better.”

Despite the positive attitude, the defeat leaves Real Madrid facing questions about their form and direction. Guardiola, while acknowledging the difficulty of winning at the Bernabéu, reiterated his belief that City still has work to do to reach the level required to compete for the Champions League semi-finals and beyond.
