Marc Guehi Confirms Crystal Palace Exit, Liverpool Remain Frontrunners

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has informed the club he will not be signing a new contract and intends to leave Selhurst Park next summer, manager Oliver Glasner revealed on Friday. The news reignites speculation surrounding a potential move to Liverpool, who previously saw a £35 million deal for the center-back fall through.

The 25-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the 2024-2025 season, opening the door for a host of European giants to compete for his signature. Despite recently downplaying the fallout from his previous failed transfer attempt, Guehi has made it clear his future lies elsewhere.

Guehi’s Departure: A Mutual Understanding

According to Glasner, the decision was a direct communication from the player. “I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” the manager stated. “The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, ‘No, I want to make something different’. And that’s normal.”

The focus now shifts to how Crystal Palace will navigate this situation. Glasner emphasized the need for open dialogue: “And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.”

Liverpool’s Position and Potential Competition

Liverpool remain heavily linked with Guehi, and the player’s profile aligns with the needs of new manager Arne Slot’s system, specifically a ball-playing center-back. However, a January move appears unlikely. Reliable journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic reported earlier this month that Liverpool are “not expecting” to enter the market for a center-back in the upcoming transfer window.

Instead, the Reds are reportedly prepared to wait until next summer to potentially secure Guehi on a free transfer, contingent on their existing center-back situation. Liverpool are hopeful Guehi’s preference remains with them, even if it means waiting six to twelve months.

The competition for Guehi’s services extends beyond Anfield. Reports suggest interest from European powerhouses Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, all of whom could initiate pre-contract negotiations with the player as early as January 1.

Navigating a Potential January Sale

Crystal Palace could opt to sell Guehi in January to recoup a transfer fee, but any deal would likely be a “cut-price” return given his expiring contract. Liverpool, however, are unwilling to overpay, refusing to meet any “inflated figure” that doesn’t reflect Guehi’s impending free agent status.

A January transfer hinges on Crystal Palace’s willingness to negotiate, mirroring the challenges faced during the summer window. While Guehi could provide an immediate boost to any defense, Liverpool’s decision-makers have demonstrated a willingness to exercise patience when pursuing their top targets.
