From Gymnast too sports Law: One Graduate’s Journey to Impactful Career

A lifelong passion for athletics and a desire to connect communities led one recent graduate to pursue a Master of Sports Law and Business at Arizona State University,transforming a love of sport into a future career focused on service and strategy.
For manny, sports represent competition. But for Peyton Valdez, sports have always been about something more: community, identity, and a sense of belonging. After dedicating 20 years to gymnastics, Valdez sought a new avenue to remain connected to the world that had profoundly shaped her. This search ignited a passion not just for athletics themselves, but for the unique power of sports events to inspire, forge memories, and unite people.
This realization prompted a move from Houston to Phoenix and enrollment in the Allan “bud” Selig Sports Law and Business program at ASU. “My life revolved around gymnastics,” she recounts.”After retiring, I looked for ways to stay connected to the sport.” She immersed herself in the collegiate gymnastics scene, attending every home meet and traveling to prestigious championships like the SEC Championships and National Championships. This experience allowed her to view gymnastics – and sport in general – from an entirely new vantage point.
“I experienced gymnastics from an entirely new perspective and became captivated by the power of sports and events to shape people’s lives and create lasting memories,” valdez stated. “From that time onward,I knew I wanted to contribute to sports and events that would allow people to experience special moments and build sustaining memories.”
Balancing Skills for Success
During her time at ASU, Valdez discovered the importance of a well-rounded skillset. She learned that success isn’t solely dependent on technical expertise.”I learned the value of balancing soft skills and hard skills, and when to let each one have its moment,” she explained. Prior to ASU, her focus had been almost exclusively on developing technical abilities. However, she quickly realized that effective dialog, strategic networking, and strong interpersonal skills are often equally, if not more, critical.
A Lifelong Connection to ASU
Valdez’s connection to arizona State University runs deep. She first envisioned herself as a Sun Devil at the age of 14, drawn to the school’s vibrant school spirit, immersive campus life, and strong sense of community.”That’s held true for me since that age,” she affirmed. Beyond the overall university experience, the unique Master of Sports Law and Business program proved to be a decisive factor. “The Master of Sports Law and Business program is one of one,” she said proudly.
The Power of Self-Belief
Professor Ray Anderson imparted a particularly impactful lesson during Valdez’s time at ASU: “Bet on yourself, it’s a good bet.” According to valdez, Anderson consistently encourages students to believe in their potential, invest in their personal and professional growth, and confront challenges head-on.This advice resonated deeply and has become a guiding principle in her approach to life and career.
Advice for Current Students
Valdez offers straightforward advice to those still navigating their academic journeys: “Take every opportunity that comes your way, and if there’s not one, make one.” She emphasizes the importance of proactively seeking experiences, building connections, and embracing the unknown. “You never know the experiences you might have, people you may meet or doors that can open simply by putting yourself out there.”
A transformed Trajectory
The impact of the degree program on Valdez’s professional prospects has been profound. “This degree changed my professional trajectory for the absolute better,” she stated. Entering the program with limited professional experience, she is now graduating with a wealth of skills, connections, and practical experience. “I feel confident in my abilities and prepared to take on whatever comes next in my career.”
