Since August 1st, the receipt is no longer delivered automatically but only on request. However, there are exceptions. Certain purchases are still subject to the obligation to print a receipt. This is the case for services exceeding 25 euros, during a visit to the hairdresser for example.

According to the cabinet of Olivia Grégoire, minister delegate in charge of trade, this exception makes it possible to materialize the “proof of the transaction”. This also applies to the entire hotel and restaurant sector, which must print (or email you) proof that the service has been invoiced.

Another exception, of which we think less, is that of weighed products. As soon as you use a scale to weigh what you buy, “regulations require the consumer to be given a ticket”, indicates the official website of the Ministry of the Economy.

Also useful for exchanges and refunds

This is also the case when the purchase concerns a product under warranty, such as household appliances, telephones or other technological devices. Receipts must also indicate the duration of the warranty. So check that the invoice is given to you (or sent).

Abandonment or transaction error tickets are also automatically printed, as well as all the invoices from the machines, such as parking tickets.

Finally, among the receipts that are now only provided on request, some may be useful to you. In particular for these non-food items – clothing, sports equipment, small furnishings, etc. – which could be affected by a possible return if in the end the product is not suitable or is defective. It is indeed necessary to present proof of purchase for any exchange or refund.
