The story of Shihab, a young man on his way to Hajj on foot from Malappuram to Makkah, was big news recently.

Shihab’s childhood dream was to walk and perform Hajj. Shihab replied that at first everyone who heard him was surprised but tried to repel him, but with the grace of God, the journey would be successful. Umma Zainab and his wife Shabna fully support Shihab. The trip was planned after nine months of deliberation.

Shihab left his Chelampadan home in Chottoor near Valancherry on Thursday morning. Shihab was accompanied by some locals and relatives. Then he said salam and parted. Shihab has only the essentials. Meals and funerals will be at churches along the way.

The first day’s journey ended at Parappanangadi at night. After staying at Parappanangadi Juma Masjid, the journey will start again on Friday. Shihab said he walks at least 25 kilometers a day.

The Wagah border paved the way for entry into Saudi Arabia through Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait. The visas of all the five countries were processed through Haseeb in Bengaluru.

“It was very difficult to get a visa to Pakistan,” Shihab said. He stayed in Delhi with his brother Abdul Manaf for more than 40 days, including during Ramadan, to correct the documents. E.T. Shihab, who worked in Saudi Arabia for six years after completing Plus Two and Accountancy courses, performed Umrah at the time but did not perform Hajj. After coming from Saudi Arabia, he started a supermarket in the country. Four sets of light clothing, sleeping bag, umbrella and other essentials only. The decision is based on food, sleep, places of worship and so on.
