Hanyang University and Tanzania Forge Partnership to Advance Digital Technology Education

Seoul, South Korea – Hanyang University has entered into a landmark agreement with Tanzania’s Ministry of Information and Communication (MCIT) to foster collaboration in advanced technology and educational innovation. The partnership, formalized on Thursday, aims to accelerate digital transformation and cultivate a skilled workforce in Tanzania through initiatives focused on artificial intelligence, robotics, and data centers.
The agreement builds upon Tanzania’s national digital development strategy and leverages Hanyang University’s expertise in key areas, including AI, data centers, robotics, distance learning platforms, and an innovative IC-PBL (Industry-Connected Problem-Based Learning) education model. A senior official stated that the collaboration is designed to strengthen the foundation for digital technology exchange and future talent training between the two nations.
A Comprehensive Approach to Digital Advancement
The partnership encompasses a wide range of collaborative activities throughout the education and research lifecycle. These include the exchange of faculty, staff, and students; the development of joint master’s and doctoral curricula; digital-based joint research projects; and the sharing of educational content and learning resources. Furthermore, the agreement prioritizes the operation of vocational and professional education programs specifically designed to cultivate technical talent.
A core focus of the collaboration will be the enhancement of the Digital Technology Institute (DTI) in Tanzania. The two organizations have committed to establishing a long-term partnership to improve the institute’s establishment and operational model, with a particular emphasis on emerging technologies like AI, robotics, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Investing in Tanzania’s Future Workforce
Specific action plans outlined in the agreement include the creation of dedicated master’s and doctoral degree programs to train DTI faculty, the strengthening of real-time distance education and practical training opportunities, and the integration of vocational education curricula. Hanyang University plans to contribute resources to support the stable operation of the DTI and the development of a skilled technical workforce in Tanzania.
These resources will include access to an AI-Robotics practice environment, the construction of a robot vocational education center utilizing facilities at the ERICA campus, linkage infrastructure to the Kakao Data Center, and an IC-PBL-based shared education platform. The organizations intend to implement these cooperative programs over the next five years, with the possibility of additional agreements to expand the scope of collaboration to include exchange student programs, joint degree programs, professional education training, and researcher exchanges.

Lee Ki-jeong, President of Hanyang University, highlighted the significance of the agreement, stating, “The promotion of this agreement is an important starting point for expanding the digital technology education and research capabilities that Hanyang University has accumulated to the international community.” He added that the university is committed to long-term cooperation to substantially contribute to Tanzania’s national digital transformation and the development of future talent.
Switbert Zacharia Mkama, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication of Tanzania, emphasized Hanyang University’s global competitiveness in digital technology and AI education. “This cooperation will be a decisive foundation for Tanzania’s digital transformation and nurturing technical talent,” he stated.
Hanyang University views this agreement as an opportunity to strengthen international educational cooperation and global technology partnerships, ultimately contributing to the advancement of digital capabilities in developing countries across Africa.
