Minister of Fisheries and Livestock. Abdur Rahman said, Haor region will be the focal point of Bangladesh’s economic activities if the potential is utilized properly. For this a proper plan should be formulated.
He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Haor’s Potential: Pathways to Achieve and Overcome Crisis’ organized by the Greater Mymensingh Research Foundation at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council in Dhaka on Friday (March 8).

Livestock Minister said, Haor region is an immense reservoir of biodiversity. Multifaceted and well-planned initiatives should be taken and proper steps taken to implement them to utilize the vast potential of the Hover-centric economy. If the development of the Haor region is included in the mainstream of national development, it will be possible to build the Sonar Bangla of the father of the nation’s dream with the hands of Sheikh Hasina.
He said fish production in Haor region is mainly hampered by lack of permanent shelter, use of harmful china nets, killing of eggs and fry, leasing system, irrigation fishing, excessive use of pesticides on land and dehydration during dry season due to decrease in depth of Haor. A comprehensive plan should be formulated and implemented to solve these problems.
The Minister said that proper action plans should be formulated and implemented urgently to increase the plantation and productivity of Boro and develop fisheries in Haor region. The basis of economic activities in the life system of Haor area is very waterlogged. Special attention should be paid to activities related to water, such as: paddy cultivation, fish farming, duck rearing, boat communication etc.
He said that after independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman ordered the formation of Haor Development Board in 1974 for the overall development of Haor region. In line with that, the Haor Master Plan for 20 years from 2012 to 2032 has been adopted under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the overall development of Haor area including public life, livelihood and environment.
