Thai Pongal marks the beginning of the joyous festive season. The festival marks Uttarayana, the six-month northward journey of the sun.
Also, it is known as harvest festival. The festival is mainly celebrated by Tamils in India and Sri Lanka.
It is dedicated to Lord Surya. Pongal festival lasts for four days. However, in metros and urban areas this festival is celebrated for a couple of days.
The four days of Pongal are called Bogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kanum Pongal respectively.
“Pongal” means “boiling, overflowing” and is actually a traditional dish made by boiling fresh rice with jaggery in milk.
On this day, cattle are also bathed and garlanded and their horns painted with glitter.
The offerings are made first to the deities, then to the cattle, and then to the people. People thank the sun and farm animals for supporting their agriculture and blessing the harvest.
