# Harrowing Loss as Grassfires Devastate Harcourt, Victoria
A devastating grassfire has left a trail of destruction across Harcourt, central Victoria, claiming homes, businesses, and irreplaceable possessions.Residents are grappling with teh aftermath of the blaze, which erupted on January 9th, leaving a community reeling from loss and facing important infrastructure challenges.
Ravenswood Blaze Claims Dozens of Properties
The fire, which originated in Ravenswood South, quickly spread, fueled by catastrophic winds and scorching temperatures reaching 43 degrees Celsius. Authorities report that nearly 50 homes have been lost to the Ravenswood blaze,with the full extent of the damage still being assessed.
One couple, Ben Lawrence and his partner Danika, experienced the full force of the disaster. After a month of moving into their new property in Harcourt, they were preparing for their first official night at home when the fire broke out. “it was a hot wind, 43 [degrees Celsius], pretty weary from moving anyway and we were planning on being back in six or seven hours,” Mr. Lawrence recounted. Just half an hour later, they learned of the rapidly escalating threat.
Now, their home is reduced to “a pile of twisted tin and charred brick,” with their belongings reduced to ash. A stark image emerged from the devastation: a washing machine, intended for installation, remained unscathed amidst the blackened landscape.
“We’ve put everything we had into moving up here and making a big change and it’s all gone, we’ve got absolutely nothing,” Mr. Lawrence said, expressing the heartbreak felt by many in the community. “Just realising what is missing – everything we’ve worked towards for 30 years and collected, it’s all just there,” he added, gesturing to the rubble where their life had been built.
Significant Financial Losses and Uninsured Vehicles
The fire’s impact extends beyond homes. Mr. Lawrence, a mechanic who recently relocated his car restoration business from Melbourne, lost approximately $250,000 worth of vehicles. The loss is notably devastating as the vehicles were uninsured and included several custom-made cars that are irreplaceable. “About a dozen cars, some irreplaceable, were lost in the blaze,” officials confirmed.
Ongoing Challenges for Harcourt Residents
While the fire was contained on Monday, it remains a significant challenge for Harcourt residents. Contaminated water,disrupted power supply,and patchy mobile service are hindering recovery efforts. A Coliban Water spokesperson indicated it could take up to two weeks to restore safe drinking water to approximately 500 affected customers.
Transportation has also been impacted, with 5.7 kilometers of track on the Bendigo line between Ravenswood and Castlemaine requiring repairs. Train services remain disrupted.
Adding to the distress, police are investigating a burglary at a vacant home on Picnic Gully road. “Several items of value were stolen from the property, which was accessed through an unlocked window,” a Victoria Police spokesperson stated. Authorities have increased reassurance police patrols to deter further criminal activity.
