Escalating Tensions: Attacks on Israeli Lawmakers Amidst haredi Conscription Debate
The debate over mandatory military service for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men intensified over the weekend, marked by targeted attacks against two Haredi members of Knesset and widespread protests. These incidents underscore the deep divisions within Israeli society regarding the sensitive issue of conscription and the future of Haredi integration.
On Saturday night, following the Jewish Sabbath, extremist elements attacked the vehicle of MK Yoav Ben-Tzur in Jerusalem, causing damage but no injuries. Simultaneously, MK Meir Porush’s car was also targeted in Bnei Brak, with police intervening to manage the crowd and prevent further escalation.
The attack on Ben-Tzur’s car drew swift and widespread condemnation from across the political spectrum, including from his own party.”The Shas movement strongly condemns the severe attack on MK Yoav Ben-Tzur’s car, which was committed in Jerusalem by a handful of rioters,” a statement from the party read. “Violent actions like this, which desecrate God’s name, are not the path of the Torah, and do not represent any God-fearing community.”
These protests represent the latest expression of opposition from a hardline faction within the Haredi community to any plan that woudl require yeshiva students to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Currently, Haredi men are largely exempt from Israel’s mandatory draft, a practice that was declared illegal by the High Court last year. This exemption has become increasingly contentious as the IDF faces significant manpower shortages due to ongoing conflicts in Gaza and on other fronts, intensifying pressure to establish a regulated framework for Haredi conscription.
Haredi political parties have consistently advocated for maintaining the existing exemptions, even to the point of threatening to break with the governing coalition and boycott legislative processes. Just last month, approximately 200,000 ultra-Orthodox men blocked the entrance to Jerusalem in a large-scale presentation against conscription.
Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Boaz Bismuth indicated on Saturday that he is nearing completion of a draft bill addressing the issue. Bismuth stated that the proposed legislation would represent a significant shift, mandating the conscription of a portion of Haredi men who are not currently enrolled in a yeshiva. However, opposition lawmakers have voiced concerns that the bill will largely maintain the status quo, allowing most ultra-Orthodox men to avoid military service while imposing minimal penalties for draft evasion and potentially facilitating the re-entry of Haredi parties into prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition.
Politicians from across the ideological spectrum united in condemning the attack on Ben-tzur. Opposition Leader Yair Lapid posted on X, “I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on MK Yoav Ben-Tzur. This is not the way of the Torah, this is not the way of the State of Israel; these violent criminals must be dealt with severely.” Bismuth echoed this sentiment, stating the attack was “a serious crossing of the line and a blatant attempt to intimidate public officials,” and emphasizing that “sensitive issues, such as military conscription, will be discussed in the proper forum, with serious dialog, careful consideration, and democratic decisions. not in the street, and not under threats from extremists.”
Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman attributed the violence to the long-standing exemption from military service enjoyed by yeshiva students, a policy he has long opposed. “When a person is conditioned to idleness and draft-dodging, he becomes violent when someone tries to take that idleness away from him,” Liberman asserted.
The escalating tensions surrounding the conscription debate highlight the complex challenges facing Israeli society as it grapples with issues of religious freedom, national security, and social equity. The coming weeks will be critical as lawmakers attempt to navigate these competing interests and forge a path forward.
