The final work of novelist Han Kang (54), the first Korean to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, has actually already been decided. This work, whose content and length are kept secret, will not be released until 2114, 90 years later.
According to the publishing industry on the 11th, Han Kang delivered the manuscript of an unpublished novel to be published in 2114 to the Norwegian public art organization ‘Future Library’ in May 2019. The Future Library is a public art project that will accept unpublished works from one author every year for 100 years starting in 2014 and publish 100 works as paper books in 2114. Starting with Canadian writer Margaret Atwood in 2014, Türkiye writer Elif Shafak, Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaard, and others participated. Han Kang participated in the project for the fifth time.
The title of Han Kang’s unreleased work is ‘Dear Son, My Beloved‘. It is currently stored in the Oslo Library, with its volume, location, and content unknown. At the manuscript delivery ceremony, Han Kang said, “My manuscript feels like being married to this forest, like a funeral waiting to be reborn, or like a lullaby for a long sleep that gently caresses the earth.” At the time, the manuscript was delivered wrapped in white cloth. Han Kang said, “In Korea, white cloth is used for baby jeogori, small clothes, and plain cloth for newborns, so the manuscript was also wrapped in white cloth.”
