Hawkeyes Soar to Big Ten Victory Over No. 17 Michigan State

Iowa City, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team achieved a significant milestone on Saturday evening, securing a Big ten victory over No. 17 Michigan State with a final score of 196.400 to 195.675. This win marks the Hawkeyes’ first triumph over the Spartans since 2023, ending a five-meet losing streak.
The Hawkeyes demonstrated dominance across multiple events, claiming victories in vault, bars, and beam. Their performance was further highlighted by a total of four individual event titles, showcasing the depth of talent within the team.
A Night of Personal Bests and Team Triumph
The University of Iowa gymnastics team kicked off the meet with a season-high performance on the vault, posting a collective score of 49.200.This strong start set the tone for the evening, propelling the Hawkeyes into the lead. Sophomore Aurélie Tran led the charge, achieving a career-best score of 9.875 and securing the individual vault title. Close behind were fifth-year jerquavia Henderson and sophomore Sydney Turner, who tied for second place with scores of 9.850. Freshman Sophie Schriever also contributed a career-best performance, earning a 9.825.
The momentum continued on the bars, where iowa earned a 49.125.Tran once again shone, delivering a season-best score of 9.925 in the anchor position to claim another individual event title. Senior Gianna Masella, freshman Daisy Bowles, Henderson, and Schriever all contributed matching scores of 9.800,solidifying Iowa’s lead at the halfway point with a score of 98.325 to Michigan State’s 97.550.
Beam and All-Around Excellence
Iowa maintained its impressive form in the third rotation,achieving a season-best score of 49.025 on the beam. Henderson and Turner tied for first place with scores of 9.825, a career-high for Turner. Junior Eva Volpe and Schriever both added 9.800 to the team total,while freshman Maggie Ball posted a career-best score of 9.775. tran contributed a 9.750,ensuring the Hawkeyes maintained their lead heading into the final rotation.
In the all-around competition, Henderson secured first place with a total score of 39.375, demonstrating her versatility and consistency. Schriever impressed in her all-around debut, finishing second with a score of 39.250.
Iowa closed the meet with a team score of 49.050 on floor. Henderson led the Hawkeyes on floor with a 9.850, while senior Emily Erb contributed a 9.850 to take third place. Schriever continued her strong performance with a career-best score of 9.825, and Castillo posted a 9.800.
