The number of unemployed increased by 83,000 people between the first quarter of 2022 and that of 2023, rising from 1,466,000 to 1,549,000 unemployed, which corresponds to an increase of 6%, indicates the High Commission in plan in an information note relating to the situation of the labor market at the end of March 2023. This increase, continues the HCP, is the result of an increase of 67,000 unemployed in urban areas and 16,000 in rural areas.

The unemployment rate thus increased by 0.8 points between the first quarters of 2022 and 2023, rising from 12.1% to 12.9%. It rose sharply by 1.9 points among young people aged 15 to 24, from 33.4% to 35.3%, and among people aged 25 to 35, from 19.2% to 20. .9% (+1.7 points), specifies the same source. The unemployment rate for graduates, for its part, rose by 0.9 points, from 18.9% to 19.8%.

By sector, construction has experienced a creation of 28,000 jobs, against a loss of 247,000 jobs in agriculture and 56,000 in services. The industry sector lost 10,000 jobs, following the creation of 28,000 in industrial activities and the loss of 38,000 in craft or similar activities.

The HCP also points out that in the first quarter of 2023, the labor market situation was marked by a drop in activity and employment rates. The population of working age (15 years or over) increased by 1.4%, compared to the first quarter of 2022, against a decline in the working population of 1.6%. The activity rate thus fell from 44.5% to 43.1% between the two periods.
