By the power of… gray cubicle walls?
Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios unveiled the first teaser trailer for “Masters of the Universe” on Thursday, revealing a surprisingly relatable take on eternia’s Prince Adam. The trailer depicts Adam living as Adam Glenn, a bored office worker on Earth, yearning for a world of “talking tigers, spaceships and magic swords that can make a man as mighty as a god.” He’s even chided by coworkers for his “obsession with nerd stuff and sword things.”
Directed by Travis Knight, “Masters of the Universe” stars Nicholas galitzine as the iconic He-Man. The teaser reveals Adam was sent to Earth for his safety, but now Eternia desperately needs its protector. The footage also offers glimpses of He-Man’s allies, including Teela (Camila Mendes), Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), Roboto (voiced by Kristen Wiig), and Cringer-also known as Battle Cat-along with villains Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie) and Skeletor (Jared Leto).
A Nostalgic Reboot for a New Generation
The upcoming live-action film is based on the Mattel toy line that launched the beloved 1980s animated series, “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.” The franchise has a long history, including a previous live-action film in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, and more recent animated projects.
What’s the connection to “Barbie”? The new “Masters of the Universe” is Mattel’s first major film release following the massive success of “Barbie” (2023).
The new film is a continuation of Mattel’s strategy to adapt its popular toy lines for the big screen, capitalizing on existing brand recognition and nostalgia.
“Masters of the Universe” is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 5.
