Eight people were killed in a shootout between two armed groups last night in Rawangsari Upazila in Dhaka Bandarban, Bangladesh.

Officials suspect that the United People’s Democratic Front (UPD) and the Kuki-Sin National Army, the military wing of the Kuki-Sin National Front, were involved in the gunfight.

The bullet-riddled bodies from the spot were taken to Bandarban Zilla Sadar Hospital Mortuary and the bodies will be handed over to their families after post-mortem, said Abdul Mannan, Officer-in-Charge of Rowangchari Police Station.

Local residents reported hearing gunshots from Thursday evening to Friday morning.

After Thursday’s incident, around 175 families from the area have taken shelter at Rowangsari Government High School.

People left their homes in fear due to the echo of gunfire and many took shelter in nearby educational institutions. So far more than 50 families have been reported to have left.

Police are investigating the incident further.
