During a flight between Ecuador and Spain, one of the passengers went to the bathroom while having stomach pains – and suddenly went into labor, even though she didn’t even know she was pregnant.

The new mother, Tamara, was on a KLM flight from Guayaquil, Ecuador, to Spain, with a stopover in Amsterdam. And a few hours before landing in the Netherlands, “her stomach hurt and she decided to go to the bathroom. To her great surprise, after two contractions, she suddenly had a baby in her arms,” the hospital that treated her said.

“Tamara didn’t know she was pregnant, and she was quite amazed by what happened.”

A spokesperson for the airline said that two doctors and an Australian nurse who were on the flight helped Tamara after the unexpected birth, “and for that we are grateful,” it said. Tamara even named the baby Maximiliano, after one of the passengers who was by her side to make sure she was safe.

As soon as the plane landed at Schiphol Airport at 12:55 on Thursday afternoon, Tamara and her son Maximiliano were taken by ambulance to a hospital. “Fortunately, the two were healthy,” it was reported.

Tamara, as mentioned, was supposed to catch a connecting flight to Madrid – but the plans went wrong. “The team in the delivery department did everything so that both of them received proper care, and then they will continue to Madrid. We wish them the best of luck!”, the hospital said.
