On the slopes of Etna, tests are underway on the European Space Agency’s (ESA) autonomous rover, called Interact, which will have to collect samples on our satellite. The simulation, called ARCHES Space-Analog Demonstration and running from 12 June to 9 July 2022, was organized by the German Aerospace Center (Dlr) with an important participation from ESA, and will allow the functioning of the upcoming robot to be verified of the future Gateway lunar space station.
This type of autonomous robot is considered a key technology of the future that will become vital for conducting research in difficult environments, not only on the Moon or other planets but also on Earth, for example in the deep sea. Interact, which weighs around 300 kilograms, can do much more than provide images of its surroundings: its cutting-edge sensors allow astronauts to experience the planet’s surface in exactly the same way as the rover, even providing the sensation of weight and of the composition of the rocks it touches. The goal is to take samples from the Moon with the help of a person on board the lunar space station and a control room on Earth.
