The sky is brighter here. Behind Ludwigshafen the land becomes wide and the airspace above appears overexposed. Already on the horizon is the Haardt, the ridge where the forest begins. In Neustadt an der Weinstrasse there is suddenly a different architecture, reminiscent of the spa style and nearby France. The train stops and waits, a TGV roars past, then an endless freight train. My plan is to walk through the forest, from north to west to south, to feel the size of the Palatinate Forest, to see where my own feet take me, to think a little or maybe not to think so much at all. The train has started again and is moving in curves between the wooded slopes. I get out in Lambrecht, only 173 meters above sea level.
