Twenty years after the interview, I spoke with D’Amico, its author, about the behind the scenes of the report. Through Tibbets, D’Amico was able to enter the hangar where the Enola Gay, the plane from which the bomb was dropped, was disarmed (today it is in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, on the outskirts of Washington). In a corner of the hangar he discovered a bomb casing that caught his attention because of its resemblance to Fat boy, the Nagasaki bomb. There they explained to him that it was the Rufus casing, the “third bomb” reserved to be dropped again in Japan -perhaps in Tokyo- if the Japanese did not surrender, or eventually in Russia. Everything indicates that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a message for the Japanese and also for the Russians, at the dawn of the Cold War.
