A court has fined the former television presenter Holly Willoughby £2,444 and issued six penalty points on her driving license after she pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries to a scooter rider in a collision last August. The incident, involving Willoughby’s £25,000 Mini Cooper, resulted in the rider sustaining a neck fracture and a broken toe.
The 44-year-old entered the guilty plea today at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court in London, choosing to do so via post rather than appearing in person. The offense occurred on August 28th, and the case was heard under her married name, Baldwin.
Details of the Collision
According to court testimony, Willoughby was driving in London and attempted a right turn without signaling. A prosecutor stated: “The defendant was driving [the Mini] in London. The intention was to turn right, which she did without indicating, and the rider was thrown from the motorbike.”
The injured rider recounted to the court that he was actively slowing down, intending to stop, when Willoughby initiated the turn. “This caused me to be thrown to the ground in the carriageway,” he explained.
Remorse and Immediate Actions
The defense, led by Aisling Byrnes, emphasized Willoughby’s immediate remorse and actions following the accident. Byrnes told the court: “She was horrified to find she had caused this accident and the injury, that really upset her.”
Byrnes further detailed that Willoughby immediately left her vehicle to assist the rider, offering him water and her phone, and remained at the scene until law enforcement arrived. “She admitted guilt at the scene and pleaded guilty via post as soon as she got the form,” Byrnes added.
Ongoing Media Speculation
The legal proceedings come amidst ongoing speculation regarding Willoughby’s future television career. She announced her departure from the long-running daytime program This Morning in 2023, but has continued to host Dancing On Ice for ITV and recently fronted the Netflix reality show Celebrity Bear Hunt with Bear Grylls.
Recent reports have also suggested Willoughby is being considered as a potential replacement for Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, following their announcement of stepping down at the end of the year.
Representatives for Willoughby and the Crown Prosecution Service have been contacted for further comment.
