Finnian Garbutt, the actor known for his role as PC Ryan Power in the BBC police drama Hope Street, has entered hospice care as he nears the end of his battle with melanoma. The 28-year-old shared the heartbreaking news with his followers on social media Monday, revealing a shift in his care as the cancer progresses.
Garbutt’s diagnosis came in 2021, but the news that his cancer was terminal arrived in 2024, just weeks before the birth of his daughter, Saoirse. Since then, he has used his platform to raise awareness about melanoma, particularly among young people, and to document his journey with remarkable openness.
In a recent post accompanied by a photograph from his hospital bed, Garbutt expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he and his family have received. He also indicated he would no longer be actively sharing updates on his GoFundMe page, though it remains accessible for those who wish to contribute. “A day in bed supplied by @nihospice. Thank you that have supported me and my family. (sic) I will no longer be sharing my GoFundMe page, but This proves still active in bio. Love you all folks,” he wrote.
Early Signs and Diagnosis
Garbutt first noticed a lump behind his ear in late 2020, initially dismissing it as an ingrown hair. However, after lockdown restrictions eased, a visit to his barber prompted concern when the barber pointed out the lump had grown significantly. Subsequent medical evaluation led to the diagnosis of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society defines melanoma as a cancer that begins in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin – the pigment that gives skin its color.
Raising Awareness and Supporting His Family
Despite the grim prognosis, Garbutt has remained remarkably positive and proactive. He launched the GoFundMe campaign earlier this month to provide financial security for his wife and daughter, acknowledging that he would no longer be able to provide for them in the long term. “All I aim for is my wife and little baby to have the life they deserve and I wanted to be the one that provided that, which now is unfortunately no longer possible,” he shared in a heartfelt message.
As of Tuesday evening, the fundraising page has garnered £83,377, nearing its £90,000 goal. The funds will be used to support his family’s future and ensure Saoirse’s well-being.
