Associations complain about more physical, psychological and verbal violence against employees in hospitals – especially in one department. Attackers are patients and relatives. A complete reform of emergency care is called for.

It is an increasing problem throughout Germany: attacks on staff in hospitals. At the Sana Clinic in Lichtenberg, an argument escalated in the emergency room on New Year’s Eve and a doctor and a nurse were beaten up by three men. The reason: the waiting time was too long for them.

Now the hospital companies in Lower Saxony and Bremen are speaking out. They are also registering an increase in violence against employees in clinics. This emerges from answers to inquiries from the German Press Agency. The Lower Saxony Hospital Society (NKG) is calling on politicians to take action.

The NKG said there is feedback from hospitals that the number of attacks is increasing. The violence comes from the patients and often from their relatives. The trigger is often that waiting times are perceived as being too long.

“Attacks on hospital staff most often occur in emergency rooms,” said the NKG. According to the association’s assessment, people go to emergency rooms even in minor cases. This could be due to the fact that patients were turned away from doctors’ offices, practices were closed and there were no patients in rural areas. “This ultimately leads to longer and longer waiting times in emergency rooms and more potential for conflict.”

The Hospital Association of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (HBKG) agrees with the NKG. “The number of visitors to hospitals who want to use violence to solve problems has unfortunately increased,” says Bremen. The staff experienced verbal, physical and psychological violence. Employees are offered discussions to work through the situation as well as exercises for de-escalation and self-defense. The police also offer advice. Security personnel will be available in individual areas.

The background to the violence is increased demands from patients. The HBKG announced that people’s wishes collided with an undersupply in the hospital landscape. HBKG is not confident that the situation will improve. She points to a lack of financial security for the houses.

The NGK demands that the tense situation in the emergency rooms be defused. “Politicians must act and fundamentally reform emergency care,” it says. Patients should be managed differently than before. The staff must be relieved. The NKG and HBKG did not have any statistics on violence in hospitals.
