Brazoria County Tragedy: Mother Accused in Shooting, Two Children Dead

A horrific incident in Brazoria County, Texas, has left two children dead and two others hospitalized after a mother allegedly shot her four children on October 4th. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the devastating event, with early reports suggesting a severe mental health crisis.

Investigation Reveals Disturbing Statements

According to court records, 31-year-old Oninda Romelus exhibited signs of paranoia and distraction during questioning by deputies following the shooting. Investigators reported she repeatedly looked toward the door and stated she “couldn’t talk about it.” When pressed for answers, Romelus allegedly made chilling statements, saying, “Instead of them doing it to me, I’m going to do it to them,” and later, “Kill them all.”

Perhaps most disturbingly, when asked why she contacted emergency services, Romelus allegedly claimed she hadn’t called 911, but instead “called the devil,” as detailed in the affidavit.

Two Children Dead, Two Remain Hospitalized

The tragic outcome of the shooting saw a 13-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl pronounced dead at the scene. An 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl were transported to a Houston-area hospital and are currently in recovery. Their condition remains undisclosed.

Mental Health Crisis at the Core of the Tragedy

Experts suggest that events like this are often rooted in a significant and untreated mental-health crisis. Dr. Asim Shah, a psychiatrist at Baylor College of Medicine, emphasized that such severe situations rarely develop suddenly. “Usually, this severe situation doesn’t happen overnight,” Dr. Shah stated. “This takes a while to develop this severe… this bad.”

While conditions like depression and bipolar disorder can contribute, Dr. Shah identified psychosis – a complete break from reality – as the most dangerous warning sign. “Nothing can be as sad as this,” he said. “But when, as a psychiatrist, I hear this, first thing which comes to my mind is psychosis, because no person in real frame of mind will hurt anybody, but especially their own child.” He explained that individuals experiencing psychosis may become delusional and paranoid, believing they must harm their children to protect them from perceived threats.

Community Grapples with Unfathomable Loss

Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the tragedy. “I don’t understand,” one woman told KPRC 2. “How do you do something like that with your children? Precious babies that you’ve brought into the world… There’s no rhyme or reason. I just don’t understand it.” The community is struggling to comprehend the unimaginable loss and the circumstances surrounding the event.

CPS Investigation and Custody Concerns

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has confirmed that Child Protective Services is investigating the case and that Romelus had previous contact with the agency. A judge will determine temporary custody arrangements for the two surviving children upon their release from the hospital.

Recognizing and Responding to Mental Health Crises

Dr. Shah urged families to seek immediate help if they observe warning signs such as paranoia, hearing voices, or sudden changes in behavior. “If you don’t know where to start, just remember 988,” he said, emphasizing that the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a vital resource, comparable to calling 911 for a medical emergency.

For immediate support, individuals can contact 988, the Harris Center Crisis Line at (713) 970-7000, or reach out to local organizations like Family Houston, NAMI Greater Houston, or The Bridge Over Troubled Waters.
