Thanjavur: Eleven people, including three children, were electrocuted when a chariot overturned on a high voltage power line during a road mishap in Kalimedu village in Thanjavur district. Information on how the accident happened has been released.

The chariot started from the Upper Monastery in Kalimedu village and went through the main road, Upper Street, South Street, Lower Street and back to the main road.

DMK and AIADMK funding

In a statement, DMK leader and first lady MK Stalin said, “The DMK will provide Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the 11 people killed in the chariot accident and Rs 25,000 each to the 14 injured.”

AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam and co-coordinator Palanisamy said the AIADMK would provide Rs. 1 lakh each to the 11 families who lost their lives in the accident and Rs.

Rajkumar (14), R. Saminathan (56) and A. Govindaraj died on the spot.

Eighteen persons including S. Parani (13), P. Kaushik (13), S. Arunkumar (24), Ma. In this, Parani died without any treatment. As a result, the death toll from the crash rose to 11.

Upon learning of this, District Collector Dinesh Bonraj Oliver went to the hospital and offered his condolences to the affected people. He went to Kalimedu village and visited the spot where the accident took place. Kallaperambur police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.

Central and state government relief

President Ramnath Govind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor of Tamil Nadu RN Ravi and Chief Minister MK Stalin have expressed their condolences to the victims of the chariot accident. Prime Minister Modi has said that Rs 2 lakh each will be provided to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 to the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Chief Minister MK Stalin explained the accident to the legislature. Later, he proposed a resolution of condolence for the victims. Following this, all the members stood up and observed a 2 minute silent tribute.

Following this, Chief Minister Stalin went to Thanjavur, visited Kalimedu village and paid homage to the bodies of the victims with garlands. He offered condolences to their families and provided relief of Rs 5 lakh each.

The bodies of 11 people who died in the accident were autopsied at the Tanjore Medical College Hospital and handed over to relatives. The bodies of 11 people were then taken in ambulances to Kalimedu village mourning and funeral rites were performed.
