DECRYPTION – Following the coup, the French government on Saturday suspended its financial support for this state, which is particularly dependent on foreign aid.
Action reaction. To try to restore constitutional order in Niger as quickly as possible, France is trying to put pressure on the country by cutting off the subsidy tap. A decision announced on Saturday by the Quai d’Orsay: “France suspends, with immediate effect, all its development aid and budget support actions in Niger”. This unadorned statement could well ring the hallali of Niamey. Because the country is one of the poorest in West Africa. And so, too, among the most dependent on foreign nudges. Development aid, loans and other external subsidies represent an essential manna for this country where “the level of extreme poverty, rising to 41.8% in 2021, affects more than 10 million people”says the World Bank.
