Currently, there are more than 400 active radars on interurban roads managed by the DGT. Specifically, on our roads (excluding Catalonia and the Basque Country) there are 355 active radars at fixed points where they measure instantaneous speeds and 64 on sections to measure average speeds. The majority of them -approximately 90%- are of the ‘Doppler’ type, radars themselves that emit waves of microwaves against moving vehicles to calculate your speedas detailed by the organization.

The rest of the speed measurement equipment installed on roads uses laser technology, calibrated annually by the National Metrology Institute to guarantee its proper functioning. And They install on three different types of supports – gantries on the road, cabins and posts on the sides of the road -, usually at points where more accidents occur.

“The selection of locations for the location of the radars is carried out based on rigorous accident studies, giving priority to conventional roads, the type of road with the highest fatal accident rate,” he explains. Ana BlancoDeputy Deputy Director of Traffic at the DGT.

Speed control will also be intensified over the next three years with the installation of 150 new speedometers, the majority (80%) intended for conventional roads and the rest for highways and highways. In addition, 60% of the new speedometers will be section speed meters “because these are the most effective” and the rest will be fixed instantaneous speed radars, he adds.

In addition to the fixed means of speed control on the roads, there are another 325 mobile radars operated by agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard (ATGC). These speedometers are also located at points where there is an accumulation of accidents with victims (not only fatalities, but also serious injuries). Without forgetting the 11 helicopters equipped with ‘Pegasus’ radars for aerial surveillance and control.
