REPORT – The Andean country has become the world’s leading exporter of the fruit, this other “red gold”, along with copper.

On a farm near the Chilean town of Osorno, in the north of the Lakes region, several dozen pickers are busy in the stifling heat. To the rhythm of the latest reggaeton hits, these seasonal workers trot back and forth, carrying crates of 9 kg to 18 kg on their shoulders or in their arms. Just like copper, one of the country’s main resources, the treasure they painstakingly amass for the Prize group is red. In this last week of January, the cherry harvest is soon coming to an end.

Chile looks forward to this period every year. Comfortable world leader in the sector thanks to its 60% market share, the Latin American country exported around 415,000 tonnes of cherries in the 2022-2023 season, or 17% more than during the previous exercise. A flourishing trade which alone brought in 2.2 billion euros to the state coffers last year…
