How the government is trying to curb inflation in supermarkets

The government is looking at all costs for the recipe for the anti-inflation potion on the shelves. While the waltz of labels continues, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, and the Minister responsible for trade, Olivia Grégoire, had invited the distributors to a restricted meeting in Bercy, Thursday, May 11, to try to break the inflationary spiral.

On the menu, a first assessment of the “anti-inflation quarter” operation, launched in mid-March, and a progress report on the state of tariff renegotiations between brands and suppliers supposed to lower prices in supermarkets.

All distributors had more or less responded in March to the government’s request to take on their margins to reduce the consumer’s receipt. They had obtained all the latitude to compose this operation sponsored by the State (products, number of articles, duration of the operation), whereas, at the start, the government’s project was to build a basket of around fifty products . Everyone had therefore gone their own way: 150 products at cost price, 500 products at less than 1 euro, 200 products at less than 2 euros…

The anti-inflation quarter is in any case ” a success “according to Mr. Le Maire, who spoke Thursday on the sidelines of a trip to Essonne, because he allowed the French “to have access to food products whose prices have fallen”. 13% on average, according to calculations by the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention, for a basket consisting solely of the products concerned by these promotions in the various brands.

Emily Mayer of the research firm Circana (formerly IRI) notes that “The actions of distributors helped to reduce the rise in inflation in April, both for entry prices and for classic and premium private label. Again important, the progression compared to March (+ 1%) is nevertheless slower than what we could expect”. According to this panelist, the rise in prices of consumer goods reached 17.6% in April over one year. For the food section alone, it is even 17.7%.
