Facing a fire is not an easy task, especially when it is your home that is burning and when the fire spreads at high speed. Knowing what to do in these types of situations is essential to save our lives.

One of the great fears regarding home safety is that a fire will start in it, putting our lives and those we love in danger. For this reason, it doesn’t hurt to know exactly what we have to do if we find ourselves in a situation like this.

Of course, the idea is to avoid any fire in our home by having a responsible attitudebut sometimes, unforeseen events happen and the situation is beyond our control.

Experts talk about the protocol PAS: Protect (or protect ourselves), Warn and Help before a fire. It may seem like a simple guideline but, in moments of maximum tension and uncertainty, fear or anguish lead us to make bad decisions. From Healthy Housing we are going to remember some of the instructions to follow if we have a fire at home:

  • Turn off the gas and cut off the electrical current if possible.
  • Attempt extinguish the fire only if it is small and, if possible, place yourself between the fire and an escape route. You must also ensure that there are no flammable products near the fire. It is best to have a small fire extinguisher at home for this type of situation.
  • If the fire is spreading, you have to leave the house, let’s not stop at taking anything, since – and although it sounds very harsh – the only irreplaceable thing is our life. And, very important, close the door when leaving and hand the keys to the firefighters. At this point it is essential know the escape routes through which we can go outside. When it comes to a home in a neighborhood block, as a general rule we know what the emergency exits are, but it never hurts to review them mentally to be prepared.
  • If the smoke is spreadingone has to bend down and evacuate the area by crawling to avoid inhalation and it is advisable to cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth, so that it does not penetrate our respiratory tract.
  • You should never take the elevator when there is a firebecause we could get caught in a death trap, so the only option is always the stairs,
  • Since both fire and smoke tend to ascend, you should never go up to the upper floors and, if in the room we are in it begins to be difficult to breathe, we must lie down on the floor.
  • If it is impossible for us to go outside, The most sensible option is to protect yourself in the room of the house that is furthest from the fire.but that it has an exterior window through which emergency teams can come to the rescue.
  • Before we lock ourselves in, if possible We will close all the doors of the house and put obstacles in the way of the fire.. For example, wet clothes or wet towels can be placed under the door or windows to prevent smoke from entering.
  • If the fire reaches your clothing and any item of clothing catches fire, you should avoid running. It is more convenient lie down on the floor and roll over. Likewise, if there is someone with their clothes on fire, help them lie down on the ground and cover them with a blanket or something similar, pressing until the flames are extinguished.
  • If your hair catches fire, there is to cover the head quickly with a damp cloth.

And last but not least, although it may seem obvious, the most important thing is to stay calm. Fire is unpredictable and we must get away from it as much as possible and put ourselves in a safe place, even if it means leaving our house behind.
