Do you want to delete a group from Signal Messenger, but the conversation keeps reappearing on its own? Read here why that is.

Like all modern messengers, Signal also has a useful group function. Every user can quickly and easily create their own group. Over time, however, chats often accumulate and cause unnecessary distraction. Reason enough to delete a Signal group every now and then and permanently ban the conversation from your own chat list. But it works a little differently than you might think.

Deleting a Signal group only applies to your own account

You can only actually delete a Signal group, including the conversation within it, locally on your own devices. This remains valid for all other members, as do all messages exchanged in it.

Deleting the group via the chat list is not enough. Because this only removes the previous chat history from your smartphone. You will still be a member of the chat group and will receive all new messages from other participants.

You can also rejoin the conversation if necessary by pressing the compose new message button and then entering the group name in the search bar.

How to leave a chat group in Signal

To really permanently turn your back on a Signal group and delete it from your device, first leave it as follows:

  1. Open the history of the group you want to delete in Signal Messenger.
  2. Tap the group name at the top to go to the group settings.
  3. Scroll down and select “Leave Group.”

After you confirm leaving the group, the chat history will still be on your device. If you wish, you can leave it at that and thus permanently retain access to the previously exchanged information.

How to delete your Signal group conversation from your smartphone

However, if you want to permanently delete the Signal group, including all the messages it contains, from your account, you can do this as follows:

  1. Open the chat list in the Signal app on your phone.
  2. If you’re using an Android smartphone, press and hold on the group chat. On iOS, swipe left on the corresponding entry instead.
  3. Tap “Delete.”

After a short confirmation of the deletion process, you will no longer have access to the group’s entire conversation.
