It’s vacation time, the temperature is over 30 degrees. Refreshing in the water, we want to send photo messages to relatives or friends, and our smartphone crashes, because not only people, but also electronic devices often do not cope well with the heat. “If a mobile phone is left under the scorching sun, then sensitive components, such as batteries and displays, may be limited in their work or simply fail. They urgently need to be cooled in the shade. If this is not done, then the consequences may adversely affect the operation of electronic appliances: their performance is reduced, the life of the device is shortened, or even data is lost due to the sudden shutdown of the devices,” warns Sebastian Klöß, head of consumer technology at the German digital industry association Bitkom. To prevent this from happening, German information technology experts give five simple but valuable tips on how to protect your smartphone from the heat.

It is better not to use smartphones on the beaches

It is worth avoiding heavy use of smartphones in the heat: taking pictures, using navigation devices, chatting on social networks, using all kinds of applications with complex graphics, as well as recording videos – this can create an additional load on the device. So on the beaches it is better to do without a smartphone and in the truest sense of the word – turn it off and put it in a cool place.

Switch to airplane mode and remove protective covers

“When the smartphone is not actively used, it is recommended to enable airplane mode. This reduces power consumption and heat generation,” advises Bitkom. In addition, it is recommended to remove protective covers made of plastic or metal: they protect against dust, sand and moisture, but in hot weather they can prevent proper heat dissipation. Since smartphones tend to heat up quickly, you need to temporarily do without a protective case.

Properly store

The most comfortable temperature for a mobile phone is room temperature. Outdoors, the device may heat up quickly, especially if it is placed on the dashboard of a car or on a beach in direct sunlight. Pants or skirt pockets are not recommended for storing smartphones – due to the additional heating of phones from the heat of our bodies and the lack of air circulation. A smartphone, as they say, is in good hands if it is stored in a backpack, bag or covered with a cloth.

Charging smartphones only at room temperature

It is recommended to charge cell phones only in a cool state: the phone cannot be charged if it is already warm. “Since the battery generates its own heat, especially during fast charging, an already hot smartphone can be subjected to additional thermal stress,” expert Kless emphasizes.

Avoid heat and moisture

If your smartphone stops responding, then you need to close all applications and place the device in the shade. But be careful: in no case should you cool smartphones in refrigerators! A sharp temperature drop can also lead to condensation inside the device and damage the motherboard – that is, the entire electronic stuffing of the phone.

Mobile phones are afraid of moisture. For them to fail, they do not need to fall into the water. “Even high humidity is enough to cause damage, and salt water in particular can lead to corrosion even in devices that are themselves considered waterproof,” warns Sebastian Kless.
