Apple CarPlay offers drivers, among other things, access to the iPhone’s music library and map functions. How to activate the system.
Are you driving and want to access the contents of your iPhone while behind the wheel? This is possible with Apple CarPlay. Once connected, you can, among other things, access your music library from Apple Music, get directions or make phone calls.
According to Apple, there are now 600 car models from almost all manufacturers that support CarPlay. The company has published a list of all vehicles on its website. But you don’t have to do without Apple CarPlay with other models either. You can find out here how you can equip your older vehicle with the system.
To use CarPlay, you need to connect and set up your iPhone with your vehicle’s infotainment system. There are two ways to do this – via Bluetooth or cable.
How to connect your iPhone to Apple CarPlay
- Start your car and make sure that Apple’s voice assistant Siri on the iPhone and CarPlay are activated in your in-vehicle infotainment system.
- Now connect the vehicle to your iPhone using a USB cable. The USB port in the car is usually marked with a CarPlay or smartphone symbol. Then read on to point 9.
- If your car supports CarPlay wirelessly and also via the USB port, also connect the iPhone to your car’s USB port for the initial setup. Your iPhone will then ask you if you want to pair wirelessly on your next trip. Continue reading at point 9.
- If your car only supports wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice control button on the steering wheel. The button looks a little different depending on the car manufacturer, but it usually shows a head with three lines in front of the mouth. There is often a telephone receiver symbol above the head.
- Make sure the car radio is in wireless or Bluetooth mode.
- Then on the iPhone, go to Settings, then Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on as well.
- Then tap on the CarPlay network and check if “Connect automatically” is checked.
- Go to Settings, General, CarPlay and select your car.
- Your iPhone is now connected to the vehicle. The CarPlay symbol should automatically appear on the display of the infotainment system in the car. On the iPhone you will be asked for your unlock code the first time you connect so you can use CarPlay.
A note on safety when using smartphones and hands-free devices in the car: The German Road Safety Council (DVR) warns against distractions caused by such devices. It is said that the risk of accidents while using the phone while driving increases two to five times. There is also a significant amount of distraction when making calls using a hands-free system.
