“This is a valid NATO decision made with the agreement of all NATO member states. And so far, we have not overwritten this decision, we have not even discussed the possibility of amending it,” he underlined.

“Thus, any statements or plans that refer to the possible appearance of European soldiers in Ukraine are in direct opposition to NATO’s currently valid decision,” he stated.

In response to a journalist’s question, Péter Szijjártó also touched upon the speech of the President of the European Commission regarding the risks of war. He said that since Ursula von der Leyen has led the Brussels body, the security and economic situation of the European Union has only worsened.

“So it would be good if, in the short time left in the mandate, he would no longer make statements or make decisions that would further worsen the European situation, either from an economic or security point of view,” he said.

Finally, the minister reiterated that Hungary, which is directly facing the horrors of war in Ukraine’s neighborhood, is still on the side of peace.

“There is a clear historical experience that all wars end in negotiation. In connection with the war in Ukraine, there remains a question mark in this regard, or a question that says when these negotiations will take place,” he stated.

“There are two possible answers: sooner or later. And the difference between the effects of the two is that if these negotiations take place later, more people will die, if sooner, fewer will die,” he added.

“And since the end will be a trial anyway, we are advocating that this happen as soon as possible, (.) so that the lives of as many people as possible can be saved,” he concluded.
