I BLEED IN INCHES, A TALK BY SUSANA BLAS

Territori, International Festival of Performance Art of Ibiza, will open its fourth edition with a pre-festival activity by Susana Blas, curator and art historian, scriptwriter for the TVE2 program Metropolis and recognized expert in the field of art. The talk, which is titled “I bleed in inches.” Notes on performance, technology… and spirituality” will take place on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the Casal d’Igualtat d’Eivissa at eight in the afternoon. The activity is free thanks to the credits received by the Government of the Balearic Islands, through the Balearic Institute for Women and by the Ministry of Equality through the State Pact against gender violence.

Technology plays a fundamental role in our lives and since the second half of the 20th century it has established a dialogue with performance beyond the recording of actions. While performative art vindicates the physicality of the body, paying special interest in carnality and fluids – one of the characteristics of many performance art – the electronic image explores the qualities to express dream visions and mental perceptions. The fusion of the beam of light provided by the video image allows exploring themes of self-knowledge and spirituality. The digital image facilitates the coexistence of a present time and a poetic and spiritual time in the performances.

Susana will analyze the works of artists who use technology to represent different ways of approaching the art of the body: from ritual, symbolism, ancestral rites, History or transferring the present, claiming the genuine experience of the body, relating it to objects, everyday environments and memory, etc. A historical tour that includes references in this field (Marina Abramovic, Michael Journiac, Ron Athey, Bill Viola…) and that introduces artists in our context in more depth (Concha Vidal, Mapi Ribera, Isa Sanz and Isabel León).

Susana Blas is a curator and historian of contemporary art. Her area of expertise includes video, feminism and spirituality. “For me, art has to do with what cannot be counted, with the ineffable experience. In the last two decades I have worked with self-knowledge techniques and meditation, and this path is one of the centers of my life,” he declared for Territori 2023. He has received several awards and recognitions for his career, such as the MAV award in the category Project Manager for gender equality (2016) and the White, Black and Magenta award (2017). She is a member of the Advisory Council of MAV (Women in the Visual Arts) and since 1999 she has been a scriptwriter for the television program Metrópolis on TVE2, specialized in contemporary culture and art. She has curated multiple exhibitions and cultural activities such as “The Shapes of the Soul” (2015-2019), “Women Photographers. A half-told story” (2020) and Acromática (2020-2021).
