RPA vice-chairman Armen Ashotyan responded from the detention center to the information circulating in some media, according to which he will be the opposition candidate for the mayor of Yerevan in the upcoming elections.

“I didn’t have the opportunity to find out the source of such discussions in the prison, but seeing the enthusiasm of the official press in this regard, I want to respond by supplementing the opinions of my party members.

I am not going to participate in the elections of the capital authorities in any way. My Republican Party of Armenia also has a similar approach, because the priority issues of Armenia and Artsakh have nothing to do with the current administration’s wet dreams of placing Tigran Avinyan in the mayor’s chair.

Thanking all possible supporters and those who sincerely imagine me in this case, I should also say that I see 3 reasons for the government’s interest in the hypothetical nomination.

1. To give political seriousness to that “event” that falls below the level of the “Golden Autumn” festival, refers to the capital, but becomes provincial.

2. To occupy society with Yerevan elections, parallel to the gallows tightening around Armenia and Artsakh.

3. I don’t rule out that some “high-ranking” CP members who don’t like Avinyan would want me to “haram” his fantasies.

P.S. The fictional topic of my possible nomination inspired one journalist so much that he justified its expediency, although, by his own admission, President Sargsyan viewed my appointment as Minister of Internal Affairs in 2009 as “the appointment of a member of the senate on Caligula’s horse”.
