“I spend the day in the studio, I have a way of doing things very close to how an artisan does it”

Singer, producer, composer, DJ… he plays all the keys.

Yes, I think like anyone who is dedicated to a job. In the end you have to do a little bit of everything, but I consider myself a producer because that’s how I started making music.

A bit orchestra man.

exactly It is true that it also depends on each person’s desire to know. I was interested to find out. For example, talking and writing about music is something I love and have discovered in recent years. It’s a bit like what happens in all jobs, with the addition that if we’re lucky enough to be able to dedicate ourselves to something we really like and that’s very close to us, we call it passion. It’s a luck that not too many people have. If as a society we were able to make everyone’s passions transform into their work, things would be better.

He used to say that he started in the music world as a producer. How were those beginnings?

I like music since childhood. When I was about 10 or 11 years old, we had a two deck radio cassette player at home and I discovered that I could record from one to the other and at the same time put something on it with the mic. And I also discovered that I liked playing the piano. I was interested in being able to build small recordings from tracks that weren’t even tracks, but that was the start of everything. I consider that not much has changed, as I continue to work in a similar way as I did as a child, I spend the day in the studio, a way of doing things close to how a craftsman does it.

Yeah?

Whenever I talk to someone who is involved in manual arts, they tell you things that are similar to what I feel today recording. Recovering that thing from childhood that was transformed and that made me express myself in a more natural way with music.

Continuing with his trajectory. When was La Casa Azul born?

It took From my early to late teens I played in many different bands, of different styles and genres, just to be able to play. What for many people is a very pleasant time, I did not find in this sharing the same pleasure that I found in “the study”, in the work of a craftsman as he said. I realized that if I didn’t find someone who vibrated like me, it wasn’t worth it anymore. I decided that I would make a group that would be just me and around that create a fantasy around having a phantom group, that the group didn’t exist and it was me in the studio. Logically, this is difficult to sustain if luckily the thing goes ahead and after a few years I already transformed it to a more standard ground with a staging that kept the fantasy.

It ended up going to the same system in the end, didn’t it?

right There is a certain militancy in saying that the important thing is the work and not its author. We found people who were looking for that group and found a bald one and all the militancy made sense. But in the end we found the opposite effect, as it was more talked about than the music we were making. We have to be aware that the world as we would like it, as far as the industry is concerned, is not the way we would like it, but it is the world we have and you have to take stock of what you are willing to do.

Despite this militancy, when the first notes of La Revolución Sexual are played, they immediately relate to La Casa Azul.

Of course! And it’s incredibly lucky. I have friends who have groups and who don’t like to be known for this or that, it’s not my case. This connects with what is the popular song of all life beyond the contemporary, it is the songs that survive and are in the collective dialogue. That it stands out above the rest and that it has already taken its own path, I think it has value on its own. In addition, it defines the spirit of the group well, I feel identified with it and I never tire of playing it.

2019 was when they released their latest album, The Great Sphere, and the pandemic caught you in the middle of the presentation.

We were lucky. The last concert we did was the official presentation at the Razzmatazz hall in Barcelona. It was the last concert for many people before confining us.

How would you say this record is?

It is a turning point that allows me to continue forever. For many years I doubted myself if I would be able to reach a stage of maturity and bring it to the musical ground as I did. I decided to speak with the same conviction and innocence that I spoke with when I was a teenager, but now talking about my day-to-day things, about what worries me. Now I can say that it does work and that I see myself narrating my life through songs from this project.

Although there hasn’t been a new album in four years, they have released singles.

I’m lucky to be on a label that respects the artist and allows me to do the way I want. We will probably release a new album in mid-2024 and we will probably continue to release some singles.

Ready for the Figueres concert?

Very happy and expectant. We feel lucky because it is a unique environment. It’s not too common to do concerts like this. Posters like the Acoustic show that the country is very healthy at all levels.
