Awaveda with MK Ofer Kasif (from MK Kasif’s Twitter)
Administrative detainee Khalil Awawada, who has been on hunger strike since October – announced this evening (Wednesday) the end of his hunger strike – 172 days after he started it as a protest against his arrest.
Awawada, who is affiliated with the Islamic Jihad, signed a pledge that he would not engage in terrorism again or commit acts that would endanger the security of the region. Egypt, which intervened in the crisis surrounding his hunger strike, gave a guarantee that Awaweda would not return to terrorist activities.
In his letter of commitment it is stated: “I am Khalil Awawda, hereby declare and undertake that I will not return to terrorist activity or commit crimes that endanger the security of the region. It is clear to me that if I break my commitment, the security forces will be able to take all the legal measures at their disposal”
According to the reports, Awawada’s administrative detention will not be extended and he is expected to be released subject to the fact that no information is found that indicates a danger on his part. He defined it tonight as an “overwhelming victory of the Palestinian people” and thanked his supporters in a video he published.
As a reminder, in the framework of the cease-fire agreement between the Islamic Jihad and Israel during Operation Dawn, the Egyptians undertook to work for his release.
Last night I visited the hunger striker Khalil Awade in the hospital following the High Court’s decision to leave him in “suspended administrative detention”, in fact – he was imprisoned after being kidnapped without trial, without evidence and without an indictment.
“Administrative detention” is a draconian tool of repression that characterizes tyrannical regimes. I call for Khalil to be released immediately and without any conditions! pic.twitter.com/E7S63UTwlm
