Lithuania and Iceland will lead the alliance of more than 20 countries to clear mines in Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia nearly two years ago, DPA reported.

A corresponding memorandum of understanding was signed in Brussels, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced.

“We have taken the necessary first step towards the important work ahead. If the training aspect of demining is currently satisfactory, the need for equipment is critical,” said Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anushauskas.

The Baltic republic is to provide armored personnel carriers and 1.2 million euros ($1.28 million) for demining. It also plans to send Ukraine additional military aid, he added.

At a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, the Lithuanian Minister of Defense called on the Allies to increase their aid to the country attacked by Russia, in order for it to integrate into NATO structures and renew its military capacity, writes BTA.

“We are able and must maintain NATO’s political and practical support for Ukraine and thus contribute to its victory in this war. Likewise, we must negotiate further steps for Ukraine’s NATO membership,” Anoushauskas said. .

“Furthermore, we must learn the lessons of the war in Ukraine as soon as possible and continue to strengthen our armed forces and the Alliance,” he added.
