Mali: a geopolitical game board.- Selenn Fernández Juin

Suffering from problems of a structural nature (generalized poverty, sociocultural, historical, religious diversity…) and cyclical (expansion of violent extremism, penetration of external actors…), Mali has established itself as an ideal platform for strategic rivalry in the Sahel. In the context of this multifaceted crisis, and despite the long-standing struggle by local governments and the international community, there is a rise in instability and expansion of insecurity in the territory. The delicate situation in which the African country finds itself – at a time when the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) came to an end in December 2023, and what appears to be the reactivation of the Tuareg conflict -, generates big questions about the future of the region. Under this premise, it is important to look back at some issues that have contributed to the consolidation of Mali as a “model to follow” for its neighbors today, as well as the emergence of new geopolitical blocs, such as the Alliance of Sahel States.
