Madurai: Rotora shops and restaurants who want to retain customers can use the oil made from vadas and fritters to make biodiesel and make a profit.
Cooking oil that has been used once for cooking can cause stomach ache, ulcer and cancer if used repeatedly.
Big restaurants sell used bakery oil to small shops in Rotorua at very low prices. Instead, you can get a good price by giving it to the agencies, says Jayarampandian, District Nominating Officer, Food Safety Department.
He said: Under the ‘RUGO’ project, we have obtained 2 lakh liters of used oil from hotels, temple almshouses and hospital canteens in Madurai district in the last three years and converted it into biodiesel.
In Madurai, 8500 liters of used oil has been received by three agencies in February alone. It is offered up to Rs.40 per litre.
400 to 500 liters of oil per month is received from Meenakshi Temple and 300 to 400 liters each from Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Velammal Hospitals.
In this way other companies and Rotora small shops can profit by handing over the used oil to the agencies. This will give the customer the satisfaction of providing quality food, he said.
