In Japan, the ingredient ‘Rosuvastatin’ in red koji is known to have a cholesterol-lowering effect, and many health foods using red koji have been sold.
However, it is known that red yeast fungi contain a component that produces a mold poison called ‘citrinum’, which may cause kidney disease.
Previously, on the 22nd, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical announced that it would frequently recall functionally labeled foods using red malt. It was explained that this was because health damage such as kidney disease occurred among consumers who consumed it. They announced that they would be recalling 5 products, including ‘Red Koji Cholesterol Help 60 pills, 20-day supply’.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s series of products, which claim to be effective in lowering cholesterol levels by using red koji, have annual sales of 600 million yen (about 5.3 billion won). The products subject to recall have been sold in drug stores and elsewhere in Japan since 2021, and the cumulative number of sales is nearly 1.1 million, the Nippon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported.
The problem is that Kobayashi Pharmaceutical also provided red yeast to other companies.
