Igor Shesterkin Leaves Rangers Game With Right Lower Leg Injury

New York Rangers star goaltender Igor Shesterkin sustained a right lower leg injury during a game against the Washington Capitals on Friday night at Capital One Arena, leaving the ice without putting weight on his leg as the team awaits word on his condition.

The New York Rangers saw an electric start to the season hit a serious speed bump when their Vezina Trophy-winning netminder went down during the second period. With Washington on a power play at 8:20 of the middle frame, Shesterkin scrambled and skated back toward his net.

His right skate jammed hard into the goalpost as he slid back into the crease. His leg recoiled and bent awkwardly beneath him before he fell, slamming his glove on the ice in pain.

How Igor Shesterkin Exited the Ice Against the Capitals

Medical personnel quickly attended to the fallen goaltender inside the crease, with Rangers head athletic trainer Andy Hosler coming out to assist. Rangers defensemen Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson helped Shesterkin off the ice without putting any weight on his right leg, escorting him down the tunnel to the locker room.

The club confirmed at the start of the third period that Shesterkin would not return due to a lower-body injury. Before exiting, he had stopped 13 of 14 shots.

Backup Dylan Garand took over in net with the score tied 1-1. Garand stopped 11 of 12 shots in relief, but Boone Jenner scored late in the second period to hand New York a 3-1 defeat that snapped a four-game winning streak.

Teammates acknowledged the immediate psychological blow of losing a foundational player. Shesterkin entered the matchup with a 3-1-0 record, a 1.75 goals-against average, and a .926 save percentage, having also made history on Oct. 1 by becoming the first Rangers goalie to score a goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“Definitely not a good feeling for anyone seeing anyone on your team go down, especially a guy like that who’s kind of the pillar on the back end there,” New York defenseman Adam Fox said. “You know, it (stinks). Obviously, we’re hoping for the best for him.”

Head coach Mike Sullivan noted the severity of the potential absence after the final horn, pointing to the goaltender’s elite status within the league.

“Well, it’s concerning, obviously,” Sullivan said. “He’s a big part of this team, without a doubt. I’ve said it on so many different occasions: He is amongst the best goalies in the world, if not the best. He’s that good.”

Captain J.T. Miller echoed those concerns while emphasizing the need for the rest of the roster to elevate their play.

“It’s awful. He’s a pillar of this team. It stinks. Obviously, it’s early. We don’t even know what’s going on, but to see him leave the game is a shot to all of us, a shock to all of us. But at the same time, it means we got to step up to a man to try to get the job done, especially Garand.”

Mika Zibanejad also emphasized the veteran’s vital role within the locker room and his consistent impact on the ice.

“He’s been a huge part of our team for a very long time,” Rangers center Mika Zibanejad said. “He’s been giving us a chance to win every night, and tough to see him go down. Just hoping for the best, obviously.”

New York Goalie Depth Tested Amid Existing Injuries

The potential long-term absence of the team’s starter places immediate stress on organizational depth.

That leaves 24-year-old Dylan Garand to shoulder the load. Garand was recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Oct. 1 after clearing waivers, and he previously earned his first NHL shutout in a 2-0 victory against the Detroit Red Wings.

Behind Garand, organizational options are constrained. Netminder Spencer Martin is also dealing with a lower-body injury that classifies him as day to day, leaving 22-year-old Callum Tung—who has just 20 AHL games to his name—as a potential option to be recalled to serve as backup goalie Sunday at Madison Square Garden against the Vancouver Canucks.
