Illinois to Boast college Football’s Largest Video Display at Gies Memorial Stadium

The University of Illinois is set to revolutionize the game-day experience at Gies Memorial Stadium with the installation of a massive new video display, confirmed to be the largest in all of college football. The project, a collaboration with Daktronics (NASDAQ-DAKT), will deliver over 26,750 square feet of LED display space and is slated for completion before the 2026 college football season.

According to a release, the Fighting Illini partnered with Daktronics to design, manufacture, and install a network of displays that will significantly enhance the atmosphere at games. university officials stated this upgrade will create “one of the nation’s best game day experiences.”

A Display of Unprecedented Scale

The centerpiece of the upgrade will be a south end zone display measuring approximately 69 feet high and 250 feet wide. Featuring a 10-millimeter pixel spacing, the display promises high-resolution imagery and enhanced contrast, capable of showcasing live video, instant replays, vibrant graphics, and crucial game statistics.

the sheer size of the display is noteworthy, boasting 16 million pixels and ranking as the fifth-largest display in professional football. To put the scale into perspective, the new display is comparable in size to the main outfield screen at Citi Field in new York and is 3.4 times larger than the main display at Soldier Field in Chicago. A representative noted that it would require 1,621 60-inch televisions to cover the entire surface area.

Enhancing the Fan Experience

Beyond the main display, the project includes a thorough network of additional LED screens designed to immerse fans in the action. A “super ribbon” display will be installed in the north end zone, alongside two sideline ribbon displays along the seating fascia. Two field-level displays and eight bleacher displays will further enhance the in-bowl experience. The north end zone super ribbon measures 12.5 feet high by 180 feet wide, while each sideline ribbon is approximately 4 feet high by 427 feet wide.

Notably, two video displays will be positioned on the backside of the main display, facing outward to engage fans as they arrive at the stadium. Thes displays, measuring 29.5 feet high by 52.5 feet wide, will be utilized for pre-game hype videos, post-game celebrations, and promotional content.

Daktronics will also provide a complete Show Control solution, including its Camino system, offering a user-friendly platform for dynamic, real-time content creation. Camino’s capabilities will allow for the integration of data-driven visuals and automated production elements, creating a more engaging and responsive experience for fans. Along with the installation, Daktronics Creative Services will produce a custom content package for the Fighting Illini.
